We briefly stopped in
for a sneak peek at the basilica in Santa Maria Degli Angli (St Mary of the
Angels). How extraordinary! A bit like looking at history in a teacup! This
place revolves around Francis of Assisi and his dedication to living as Jesus
did. St Francis’ original chapel and place of residence has been ingeniously
enthroned by an exterior cathedral. It was quite eerie entering the ancient,
dark, cold chapel and pausing to reflect as worshippers knelt in silent prayer.
Out of the chapel and a few paces to the right and we found ourselves staring
into the small, modest, cold, damp building St Francis called home. I found
myself moved by St Francis’ dedication to serving Christ, yet bemused by some
of his eccentricities.
