Madrid, Spain

Today we crossed the Somosierra Pass to Madrid, the highest capital in Europe and we saw snow up close and personal on the way! The countryside went from lush green to dry and brown with stumpy vines in the numerous vineyards. After a quick drive by of the city we visited the impressive Prado Museum and were in awe of the artworks. Of particular interest was the work of Goya, Murillo and Velazquez.

The local sparky!!

The countryside of Spain on the way to Madrid

Plaza de Toros Las Ventas - bull fighting ring where people were lining up to go in for the bull fights. I cannot understand why anyone would pay money to witness such cruelty.

Flamenco dresses on sale at the Spanish version of David Jones, El Corte Inglis.

The street names have images so that people who were illiterate could find their way around or be directed.

The locals just chillin' in the Plaza Mayor

Plaza Mayor

Plaza Mayor - At night this is the hub of Spanish dining and social get togethers.

Plaza Mayor - Watching all the street performers is very entertaining. The Spanish take advantage of the naivety of tourists, especially Australians!! We loved the Plaza Mayor so much we went back the next day for an evening stroll.
Dinner was lots of fun - Sherry, Sangria, Red Wine, Champagne toast with flaming Bombe Alaska, , traditional Spanish fish soup, Suckling Pig and serenading by three very amusing gentlemen we gave the name, The Three Amigos.

Madrid by night - stunning
